Do You Know How Long Whitening Generally Lasts?

Do You Know How Long Whitening Generally Lasts? Many people today like the idea of getting in-office whitening for their teeth. The process is fast (you usually only need one appointment) and provides good results.

What Is an In-office Whitening?

Also known as chair-side bleaching, an in-office whitening normally uses a highly concentrated bleaching agent, such as carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, to whiten the teeth. Today, a numbing agent is usually added to bleaches to make the procedure more comfortable. We will use a dam to protect the gums from irritation as well. While you can whiten your teeth at home, this type of procedure is monitored in-office and is safer, quicker, and more effective. Heat or light may be used to accelerate the bleaching agent.

How Long Does an In-office Whitening Take and How Long Will It Last?

Typically, we can whiten your teeth in under an hour. Therefore, your teeth, on average, will be five shades lighter after the treatment. Most people are well-pleased with the cosmetic results. If you practice good hygiene at home and visit us every six months for a professional cleaning and exam, you are in-office whitening can last up to 3 years.

What Causes Teeth to Become Discolored?

Over time, your teeth may become discolored from what you eat or drink. Acidic or dark-colored beverages or foods can discolor the teeth or produce surface stains. While you can remove surface stains with professional cleanings, you need something more substantial to whiten faded or discolored teeth. Other reasons for discoloration include heredity factors, vaping, smoking, or taking some medicines, such as tetracycline. Infection or trauma can also cause a tooth to turn greyish, bluish, or yellow. In some instances, a patient may not be the right candidate for in-office whitening. If so, we may recommend the placement of crowns or veneers to brighten a person's smile.
