Sedation Dentistry in Boise, ID

At Water’s Edge Dental, we understand that visiting the dentist can feel overwhelming for many people. Whether you experience dental anxiety, have a sensitive gag reflex, or require extensive procedures, sedation dentistry helps you receive the care you need in a completely calm, comfortable, and stress-free environment.

Dr. Geoffrey Herzog, Dr. Alexandra Hyder, and our team prioritize your peace of mind and safety at every step.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety & Fear

Many individuals delay or completely avoid routine dental checkups and necessary treatments due to stress, a fear of pain, a high gag reflex, or previous negative experiences. Avoiding the dentist often leads to worsening oral health issues that eventually require more complex care.

Sedation dentistry helps bridge this gap. Beyond managing anxiety, sedation offers significant benefits:

  • Comfort During Long Procedures: It makes multi-treatment visits or lengthy appointments feel much faster and easier.

  • Support for Special Needs: It provides essential support for patients with physical, mental, or sensory limitations that make remaining still or sitting in a dental chair difficult.

  • Minimized Discomfort: It helps relax facial muscles and reduces post-treatment soreness.

If you or a family member experience dental anxiety or special health considerations, please let our team know when booking your appointment so we can tailor a sedation plan that fits your needs.

Sedation Options We Offer

Our office provides multiple sedation techniques tailored to your comfort level and the complexity of your treatment.

1. Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)

Nitrous oxide is a safe, sweet-smelling, and non-irritating gas inhaled through a small, comfortable mask over your nose. Used safely in dentistry for decades, it delivers a blend of at least 30% nitrous oxide mixed with 50–70% oxygen.

  • How It Feels: You will experience rapid relaxation and a light, calming sensation within 2 to 3 minutes of breathing the mixture. You remain awake, fully conscious, and in control of your bodily functions throughout treatment. Some patients experience mild amnesia or fall into a light sleep.

  • Key Advantages:

    • Works rapidly (reaches the brain in ~20 seconds).

    • The level of relaxation can be easily adjusted throughout your procedure.

    • Suppresses sensitive gag reflexes.

    • Leaves no “hangover” effect—the gas clears your system quickly, allowing you to safely drive yourself home or back to work after your visit.

  • Considerations & Contraindications: Nitrous oxide is not recommended for patients diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), severe emphysema, or upper respiratory blockages/colds that restrict nose breathing. If you are unsure, ask our team for a 5-minute trial before starting treatment.

2. Oral Conscious Sedation

For moderate to high levels of anxiety, oral sedation involves taking a prescribed medication (typically a pill from the benzodiazepine family, such as Valium, Halcion, Xanax, or Ativan) roughly one hour before your appointment.

  • How It Feels: Oral sedation calms the central nervous system, creating a deeply relaxed, sleepy state. While you remain awake and able to respond to our team, you will feel completely detached from stress and may have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.

  • Key Advantages:

    • Allows multiple procedures or full-mouth restorations to be completed in a single, relaxed visit.

    • Significantly lowers physical stress and anxiety during treatment.

  • Safety & Guidelines:

    • Companion Required: Because oral sedatives cause lingering drowsiness and disorientation, you must have a responsible adult escort you to and from our office. You cannot drive or travel alone after taking this medication.

    • Medical Evaluation: Benzodiazepines are central nervous system depressants. Please inform our team of all current medications and health conditions. Oral sedation may not be suitable if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, severe respiratory conditions (COPD, severe bronchitis), congestive heart failure, impaired liver or kidney function, or are pregnant. Never combine prescribed oral sedatives with alcohol or other depressants.
